OPERATIONAL CONTEXT

Not every room is a vital area, and treating them all as one wastes the protective budget

A vital area is a location containing structures, systems, or components whose sabotage could cause an unacceptable consequence — radiological, safety, or mission. Determining which locations meet that bar, and which do not, is a modeling exercise, not a walkthrough judgment call.

GSS traces sabotage logic from equipment failure through to consequence, screening systems and structures against a defined consequence threshold and aggregating the locations that contribute into a minimum candidate set of vital areas. The goal is precision: enough area protected to eliminate the consequence pathway, not more than that.

The resulting vital area set is the direct input to target set identification at the equipment level, and to the protective strategy — barriers, detection, response — built around it.
